Tutorial: How to make a Starfleet uniform

Based on Uhura’ s costume in the 2009 Star Trek movie:

1. Start with an overized t-shirt

2. While wearing the shirt, use a marker to mark where you’ll need to sew on each side of the t-shirt to make it very form fitting. Once you’ve taken it off, put pins on your marks and sew the new seams.

3. Cut the sleeves shorter and hem them if necessary.

4. Cut the neck into a v-neck.

5. Get a black shirt to wear underneath your dress with a fairly high neck line (you can probably find a cheap one at your local thrift store).
6. You can draw a com badge on a piece of stiff, but fairly thin cardboard. Then paint and cut out the badge and hot glue it to a safety pin (that’s not what I used for this particular one, though. I found a button at the craft store that was the perfect shape and painted it to be the correct color and design).

7. The finished product!

Confessions of a Closet Trekkie

The secret sci fi obsession
Revealed in my DVD collection,
Every Star Trek ever made
I have safely hidden away,
Going to comicon dressed in costume
As Star Trek posters line my room.
My dresses and make-up provide no clue
That I own vulcan ears and a Starfleet uniform too.
Beam me up, Scotty,
I am a closet trekkie.
